PEMF research has investigated nitric oxide as one potential vascular pathway. In a double-blind randomized study of adults with metabolic syndrome, circulating nitric oxide increased following 12 weeks of PEMF treatment, while the sham group did not demonstrate a significant increase. [1]
Healthy circulation helps transport oxygen and nutrients throughout the body—important components of normal physiological function, recovery and performance.

Human studies have investigated whether PEMF can influence measures of circulation and microcirculation.
A randomized controlled trial involving people with diabetes and healthy participants used 30 minutes of PEMF at 0.5 mT and 12 Hz. PEMF produced greater changes in blood-flow velocity in the smallest observable vein compared with sham treatment. However, several other circulation measures did not differ significantly between groups. [2]
A separate randomized, double-blind pilot study involving 13 people with chronic diabetic foot ulcers reported increases in capillary blood velocity and diameter following repeated PEMF treatment. Because the study was small and involved a specific clinical population, its findings should be interpreted cautiously. [3]
PEMF has been studied for potential effects on circulation and microcirculation, but results vary by protocol and population. That's why Revivelife describes circulation as an important area of PEMF research, rather than promising a specific increase in blood flow.

A 2024 review examined PEMF as an adjunct to exercise and identified performance, physical activity and recovery as areas of ongoing interest. [5]
Importantly, a 2021 sports-medicine review concluded that convincing evidence specifically supporting pulsed electromagnetic therapy for athlete recovery was lacking at that time. [6]

For example, the circulation RCT described above used 0.5 mT, 12 Hz for 30 minutes, while the diabetic-foot pilot used 12 Gauss, 12 Hz for 60 minutes over 14 sessions. [2,3]
